FAAST Action Protects EMR

Project Case Study

EMR

Project:

Fire Alarm Aspirating Sensing Technology (FAAST)

Client:

EMR

One of the world’s leading metal recyclers, EMR recently enlisted our support to further safeguard them against the risk of fire at their Oldbury recycling depot. Due to the vast quantities of metal they manage, their halls are huge with 18 metre high ceilings and equipped with bulky heavy plant making them awkward from an installation perspective.

Following an extensive survey, Bryland Fire recommended the Honeywell Gent FAAST XM™ – the very latest in Fire Alarm Aspirating Sensing Technology which is designed to deliver highly accurate and early warning fire detection. Product solution selected it was a matter of installation method to consider. Due to the high ceilings various access equipment including standard booms, spider lifts and truck-mounted machines were rejected as impractical. Instead, and always looking to offer the best and most practical solution, Bryland called upon the assistance of Midlands based rope access specialists Rope Task. Between them the project took over 290 man hours with 550 metres of pipework installed to replace the previous fire protection system.

‘We are delighted with the product, the service and the quality of the installation. Working in a high risk of fire industry, this gives us the peace of mind, knowing that we have taken all precautions to safeguard our people, buildings and assets.’

Automatic Kitchen Fire Suppression

Automatic Kitchen Fire Suppression

Project Case Study

Hoar Cross Hall Hotel & Spa

Project:

Automatic Kitchen Fire Suppression

Client:

Hoar Cross Hall Hotel & Spa

Hoar Cross Hotel and Spa is a very prestigious Hotel and Spa complex in 50 acres of rolling Derbyshire countryside and a long standing customer to Bryland Fire. When a recent Fire Risk Assessment identified the need to consider Automatic Kitchen Fire Suppression, it was left to Bryland to identify the risk associated and fit equipment that would negate that risk.

The Hotel and Spa complex has five kitchens on site, and so all were fitted with their own ANSUL R102 Kitchen Fire Suppression system. The system has both LPS 1223 and UL300 certification.

Whilst four of the kitchens were relatively easy to install during daytime hours, the main kitchen works 18 hours, 7 days and so it was up to Bryland’s Project Manager to liase with the kitchen management, as to when would be the best time to install the system. It was done during the night time, and all was ready to cook again when the kitchen opened at 6am.

The customer was a pleasure to work with, and the systems were fitted with the very minimum of fuss. A very smoothly executed project with some very good looking installs

FM200 Fire Suppression System Install

FM200 Fire Suppression System Install

Project Case Study

Media provider returns to Bryland

Project:

FM200 Fire Suppression System Install

Client:

Media Provider

Media provider returns to Bryland for another FM200 Fire Suppression System Install.

Bryland Fire have a longstanding return customer who is one of the major players in the Domestic Media market supplying TV and Internet via Fibre among other services. As you can imagine, this market is at the moment growing exponentially with our customer taking market share all the time.

As they are continually growing and gaining more subscribers, then the need for them to grow their infrastructure is continual and was demonstrated very recently at one of their sites in North London.

At the site in question, there was a requirement for a new UPS Room to support both UPS units and Batteries and as both are a high fire risk then it was left to Bryland Fire to design, supply, install and commission a new FM200 fire suppression system. The one cylinder was located in a room adjacent to the protected room so the room space was maximised and within the room was installed discharging pipework and nozzles for the Room Space and Under Floor void.

An added complication was that the room is quite an odd shape, it had a large ceiling beam which meant that at least a third of the room volume had to be treated as a separate enclosure according to the regulations, but added to that was that there is a very small enclosure within the room which also had to be treated as a separate enclosure with its own Smoke detection and Discharge pipwork/nozzle.

The system was designed to be triggered by conventional, coincidence wired, optical smoke detectors – all in line with BS EN 15002 and BS 6266:2011. This makes false alarms, and more importantly false discharges, almost impossible.

Another great FM200 install, the latest in a long line. Delivered to their specification and in their timescales. As there were other companies involved in building and fitting out the room at the same time as the FM200 system was being installed to hit the deadlines, space was an issue – but we all managed to work around each other to get everything in.

– Project Manager, Bryland Fire.

Gas Suppression Cover & Fire Protection

Gas Suppression Cover & Fire Protection

Project Case Study

Nottingham Police

Project:

Gas Suppression Cover & Fire Protection

Client:

Nottinghamshire Police HQ

When Notts police realised that they should have some Fire Suppression in their Radio Communications Room and their Computer Room Facility, they turned to Bryland Fire to provide the Gas Suppression cover.

In a joint project with Kidde UK, a multiway Argonite (IG55) inert system was installed, that cleverly protects two different rooms with one set of Argonite (IG55) cylinders – using two diverter valves that will “divert” the gas into the room where it is required. In addition to the main system, a smaller single cylinder Argonite (IG55) system was installed to protect the lobby area of the two rooms.

As part of the project there were also other works to do such as installation of VESDA HSSD systems, renewal of all of the lighting in all of the rooms and also the supply and fitting of both Over Pressure Venting systems and also Gas Extraction systems for both of the Fire Suppressed rooms. Quite a long and involving project, it took some very careful planning, as the 24/7 operation of the Emergency Call Centre for the whole of Nottinghamshire Police was above it. Noise was very much an unwelcomed addition. The careful planning of drilling works and the like made sure that the Call Centre was not affected.

This system designed in conjunction with Kidde’s engineers brings the best of both worlds – a halving of the cylinder number on site whilst maintaining the integrity of the Fire Suppression. An absolute joy of a project to work on and an honour to support the great works that the police do!

– Bryland Project Manager.

VESDA System & FreeCool Air Conditioning Unit

VESDA System & FreeCool Air Conditioning Unit

Project Case Study

Major Blue Chip Media Provider

Project:

VESDA System & FreeCool Air Conditioning Unit

Client:

Major Blue Chip Media Provider

When you have hundreds and hundreds of data rooms situated all over the country, air conditioning is one of, if not the biggest, operating expense that you will have.

One of our major blue chip Media provider clients has found a partial solution to this problem. Their solution is to implement Freecool Air Conditioning units which have the capability to run in “dx” or recirculation mode as a normal A/C unit, however these units have the function to bring in fresh air from outside with an internal damper mechanism. Fantastic! Cool the much cooler air from outside and switch to cooling the room air if its cooler in the summer, except there is a small problem… What if you have a Gas Suppression system in the room?

The introduction of potentially “dirty” air from the outside could (and has) caused the Gas Suppression to falsely release. This was the problem presented to Bryland Fire from our customer who has had several unintentional gas releases from unwanted airborne dirt. The Solution was to fit a VESDA system to the Freecool unit in question. The VESDA unit samples the air coming from outside and on the detection of excessive particles in the air (dirt) – it automatically switches the A/C over to dx or recirculation mode, hence keeping the data room environment clean. One happy customer!

Reduced cooling costs, a much reduced risk of False activations of the gas suppression and a cleaner environment in the data room. The application has now be replicated on dozens of sites all over the UK to the customers delight, saving a huge amount of energy and helping towards their energy saving targets.
